Awnings built to survive the south-easter, not just look good in it

Retractable folding-arm awnings for Sunset Beach decks and terraces — motorised with a wind sensor as standard, not an upsell.

Shade on demand over a deck built for entertaining

The timber decks running off most Sunset Beach living rooms are built to be used, not just looked at through the glass — braais, sundowners, a pool edge with a straight line to the water. A folding-arm awning gives that deck shade exactly when it's wanted and folds flush against the wall the rest of the time, so a low winter sun still reaches the room instead of being blocked year-round by a fixed roof. Not every terrace on this coast is a private timber deck, though — the same awning over a balcony in Big Bay's apartment and townhouse schemes bolts onto the building's own facade, so the bracket goes past the body corporate before anything is ordered.

The wind-sensor spec isn't optional here

An awning left extended in a south-easter gust doesn't survive it — arms bend, fabric tears, and the cassette takes the strain it was never built for. Every awning we fit on this stretch of coast is motorised with a wind sensor that retracts it automatically before the wind gets there, on top of manual or app control for everything else. It's the single spec decision that determines whether the awning is still working in year three. The sensor earns itself twice over on the holiday houses at Melkbosstrand, where nobody is home for weeks to bring the arms in when the wind turns.

Cassette housing, because the wind doesn't take a season off

Full cassette models seal the fabric and arms away completely when retracted — the right call for a coastal position that gets weather in every season, not just summer. Solution-dyed acrylic fabric holds its colour under the UV load here, and projection runs to roughly 3-4 metres over a wide span, enough to shade a full-width entertaining deck from a single unit.

The awning question in Sunset Beach isn't whether to motorise it — it's whether the wind sensor is doing its job before the gust arrives, not after.

On-site measure, Sunset Beach
  • Motorised with automatic wind-sensor retract, standard spec here
  • Full cassette housing for year-round coastal exposure
  • Solution-dyed acrylic fabric, UV and salt-air stable
  • Projection to roughly 3-4m over a single wide span
What it costs

Folding-arm awning pricing on this coast

The charge is on shaded area: width multiplied by the reach of the arms. Crank-operated and installed, that is R3,500 through to R5,500 a square metre, and motorised, R5,500 through to R7,500. Cassette, sensor and the deeper projections all belong at the top — and here a full cassette is about keeping salt and damp off the rolled cloth as much as about the look.

Short awnings carry a floor price, because two arms, a box and a structural fixing are needed however narrow the span. What your terrace costs is settled at the measure, once we have seen what it bolts into, and it is put in writing.
